We were blessed with a beautiful fall Saturday last weekend and were able to get started on the backyard fence (the part that will run along the driveway) ... It's going to be so nice to have this all fenced off. :)

The chainsaw vs. the axe ---

The roots down in the ground were so hard to remove! One night, we rented a chainsaw and tried to cut them out. It worked for a few of the roots but when it came to the ultra, big final root, we had to hack it out - with an axe!

This project was incredibly time-consuming, stressful, dirty and expensive. We rented a bobcat, a chainsaw, a digging machine, and even hired our neighbor to help us dig.

WE are so glad that the conduit is now in the ground and the roots and rocks are gone!

Way to go team! Moving on ...

Check that out - the last section of the trench that needs to be cleared away. It's full of gnarly tree roots ... Yes, we'll be happy when all that pipe is buried and the electrical lines are tucked away down under the rocky ground.

This old house has a bunch of electrical lines running from the house through the backyard to the pole behind our house.

There they are.

In order to get rid of them, we need to dig a 3 foot deep trench and bury conduit so that when our garage is finished, the City can come out and fish the lines down through the conduit.

This is NO easy project. The ground is full of rocks and tree roots ...

It will be so nice to have all the lines underground ... We're in a bit of a rush because the concrete is being poured on Monday the 8th. GO TEAM!

That's it - the future driveway. It's dirt now - but soon will be covered in concrete.

We're just working out all the details .... As soon as the driveway is in, we'll be able to finish the wood fence on the right.

Backyard update - WARNING: dust levels are high!

This little patch of dirt is outside our back/side door - eventually, it will have garden boxes and we'll fill them with all our favorite garden veggies ... Sprinklers are in and good to go!

We worked most of Saturday on pulling all the weeds in our backyard and clearing all the firewood off the lawn. This was a dusty, dirty job. Allergies were on high alert :) ...

While at this year's Parade of Homes, I heard a man ask the builder of one of the homes how much additional it would be to have the landscaping done on a house and the builder told him it would be $50,000. Wow huh? So with each project we take on and conquer, I keep thinking - just keep working and saving money, just keep working!

Tory with the rototiller - the ground has not been watered all year so the dust storm was pretty impressive. We are so excited to get the grass in and the concrete poured back here.

The walls in this Mediterranean style home were painted a light purple. It was so elegant and welcoming!

I like the antique feel of this headboard - it was created using old ceiling tiles.
It's shabby yet elegant.

This is another headboard idea I like. It was created with a curtain rod and fabric. The fabric was decorated with favorite quotes and sayings (using fabric markers).

We have ONE huge tree left in the backyard. We had the tree guys leave piles of the trunk so we could use it for firewood. The backyard feels a little lonely now - but it will soon be filled in with a garage, cement, grass and an outdoor fireplace/pit.

We had one of the trees in our backyard removed on Saturday morning. I'm guessing it was 70 years old ... We said goodbye and watched in amazement as the 'tree guys' gently cut it down.

They told us it was sick and dying - so that made it a little easier. Now we can move forward with the garage and backyard plans.

We are in the process of building a garage in our backyard and we've been looking at books and websites for inspiration. This Saturday, we have a tree removal service coming in to remove a tree in our backyard. Once it is out, we'll be able to move forward with the garage plans.

My Dad gave me this old, wooden screen door (from the 40's) and I've used it in a variety of creative ways! At one point, it was in the kitchen by the backdoor and served as our 'mudroom' - I hung a big door hook over it and we could hang our coats on it.

The latest screen door adventure involves the dining room. I leaned it against the window and it's great for adding shade for dinner time when the sun glares in at exactly 5 pm.

I love old, salvaged pieces and giving them a new 'job' or style ... :)

Our latest project - The Driveway. We rented a jackhammer last week and broke up the old, existing driveway. THAT was a wild time! Special thanks to the entire neighborhood for hanging in with all the noise and flying rock. :)

The big old 1970s Ford truck - full of 'leftovers' from several projects! Someday soon, we'll get it up and running again and take all that junk to the landfill.

If you have ever done construction, or a big yard project or any hard work at all, you'll know that the clean-up and the mess is part of the journey!

About the weeds in the backyard ... they are there. They won't go away, they want to live and grow like mad in the back of our house. I've decided to just appreciate them for now - and I close my eyes and see green grass and pretty flowers and know that someday the weeds will be gone. :)

And I let them inspire me to keep thriving, living and growing!

This house project has and continues to teach me a GREAT deal about patience and appreciation.

It was so great to see the fence going up on the front of the house! I love how the fence improves the look and feel of this place. And the privacy is priceless.

ONE bathroom.

If you have ever been in one of these old, letter homes, you'll know that there is usually only ONE bathroom! For the life of me I can't figure out why the ONE bathroom is at the top of the stairs - but it is! There is no bathroom on the main floor. There is no bathroom in the basement. If you have to go - you have to run up an entire flight of stairs to reach the restroom.

This has been an adventure for our family of FIVE!! I had my doubts at the beginning as to how we would ever survive with ONE bathroom at the top of the stairs - but I am happy to report that we've made it work.

And I'm happy to report that plans for bathroom number TWO are in the works!! :)

On the days (like today) when I have a moment to reflect on the journey of this old place I find myself smiling and in amazement at all we've been able to accomplish with just ONE bathroom.

My birthday in the old/new house ... (looking back)

I bumped into this photo today and it made me smile ... This photo was taken last year on my birthday! New carpet was to be installed the next day and there was so much to do. I remember putting on my yucky work clothes and thinking "I don't want to spend my birthday doing this!"

Please note the black earrings - :) I think that was my simple way of celebrating my big day!! It's funny how a little thing like a pair of fancy earrings can help make things better.

My parents stopped by and we worked on getting those stairs ready way into the night ... My mom helped me paint the basement and we enjoyed spending the day together. I think we even sang "Happy Birthday" to me a couple of times!

Every time I walk up the stairs in this new, old house - I think of that day and how much I appreciate all the help we received along the way!

I'm so grateful for friends and family who join us and helped make this house journey better, brighter and a lot more fun! :)

When we dug into this house, we decided we would keep all the original doors and door knobs. Last week I found myself stuck in my bathroom when the old door knob malfunctioned and I ended up spending an hour an a half waiting to be rescued by my husband!

I didn't have a cell phone with me but luckily the room does have a window and I was so glad when my neighbor came home and was able to yell to her from (2 stories up). "Can you call my husband? I'm stuck in my bathroom!" (It's a very funny story and someday I'll share it in more detail).

Needless to say, we replaced the door knob with a new, functioning one! It's perfect.

For Christmas, my Mother-in-law, surprised me with a little chandelier. I had my Father-in-law rewire it so it could become a swag light (plug in) so I can hang it from the ceiling and turn it on/off from the chain/switch. It turned out wonderful and I love it!

I finally finished the curtains for 2 of the windows in the dining room. They turned out great. I enjoyed hanging out with the sewing machine and getting this project finished. :)

I found these white ruffle curtains at Target and thought I would try them around the house... I didn't end up keeping them because they looked like a big wedding dress hanging from the window :) - They were pretty but not what I had in mind.

I bumped into these really cute fork and spoon dish towels and thought they would add a little 'spark' in the dining room. I'm not sure where they will end up ... :)

I bumped into this room via a decorating book by Better Homes and Gardens and wanted to jump into the book and sit in that red chair and soak up the sun. I love how cozy and inviting that room looks/feels.

Must be the red and all the pillows and of course the sunshine. :)
